Group 5's Thoughts on Chapters 12 & 13

Holden took a taxi which was very awful and decrepit. Holden was trying to talk the taxi
driver naturally. The taxi driver was named Horwitz, Holden thought a better taxi driver than
the taxi driver that Holden saw in the past. A taxi driver did not know about the duck, but the
man pulled out the first talking about fish story for Holden. Holden arrived in the in front of
the Ernie club, and Holden went into the club. The famous African American pianist in club,
who called ‘Ernie’ he played the piano very well. Holden has ordered a Scotch and soda water.
Holden saw Yale man and beautiful girl that they drank together, and Holden thought that if
Holden father recommended Ivy League universities, Holden would reject his father’s
advising. Next, Holden contacted with Lillian Simon in the Ernie club, and she even knew
him. Also, she said hello to his brother D.B.

In chapter 13, plot
Holden walked to hotel because he thought troublesome which was riding taxi. He lost his
gloves in the Pencey, he wanted to hold a thief. He did not have ambition, gloves risk that the
same thing, did not care. When he arrived in hotel, elevator boy has tried to ask for Holden
that a woman for fun, so Holden was yes, and waited for the woman in his room. The
woman’s name was Sunny. She had to undress on the Holden’s bed, but Holden tried to talk
with her. But she did not have time to Holden, Holden said feeling unwell for sex would not
be. He came up to her compassion, so he gave to money for Sunny. But she went out his
room and hold him angry.

Felt point: we felt that Holden played to a very disorderly in young , he has not ambitious
nature of the back-story reveals shall be deemed to affect. Compassion to the poor man, he
has good mind.

Questions for commentators:
Question: 1. Why Holden has promiscuous life at a young age?
        2. Why Holden had given the money for Sunny without any requests?
        3. Why Holden did refuse when Lillian Simon said that Holden sat next to her?

Outsider's thoughts on Chapters 10 & 11

Summary 10 & 11

Holden didn’t felt tired, and time wasn’t too late. Therefore, he opened his suitcase and he wore a clean shirt. He planned to go Lavender Room. Lavender Room is a night club in the hotel. While Holden was wearing a shirt, he came close to call to Phoebe. He liked to call with Phoebe. Phoebe had good sense. Anyway, Holden went to the Lavender Room, and he ordered some drink. In the night club, some people were in there. Three girls who were placed next to Holden’s table giggled Holden. Holden wanted to dance, so he went to the three girls table and asked to dance. Blonde girl accepted the proposal. Holden thought she danced very well. While Holden was dancing with blonde girl, he talked to her silly talk. After he danced with blonde girl, he danced with two girls one by one. After that, Holden drank with three girls and talked to them. When those girls finished drink, they got out the Lavender Room. As soon as they got out the club, Holden got out the club quickly. While he was walking in the lobby, Holden thought about Jane again. He reminded the recollection between him and Jane. After that, Holden went to his room. There was nothing interesting to do. Therefore, Holden quitted the hotel and took a taxi to go to club which is located in Greenwich Village. We think that Holden started to bore living in New York, because he was disappointed in New York life. He was treated child, so he couldn’t enjoy New York life.

For homework, commentators do the following:

1.     Why Holden get out Lavender Room quickly?
2.     Why Holden said that Jane is not a kind of cold(icicle) girl?
3.     How Holden described Phoebe in the text?

4.     Why the women giggled Holden?

Group 3's Thoughts on Chapter 9

Holden got off at Penn Station, and he went into phone booth. He felt like giving somebody a buzz, but he couldn’t think of anybody to call up. His brother D.B was in Hollywood. His kid sister Phoebe goes to bed around nine o’clock so he couldn’t call her up. Then he thought of giving Jane Gallagher’s mother a buzz, and find out when Jane’s vacation started, but he didn’t feel like it. He also wants to call Sally Hayes, and Carl Luce. However he ended up not calling anybody. He came out of the booth, after that he took a taxi. He gave the driver his regular address, just out of habit. He completely forgot he was going to shack up in a hotel for days, but he couldn’t go back downtown. He said, ”You know those ducks in that lagoon right near Central Park South? That little lake? By any chance, do you happen to know where they go, the ducks, when it gets all frozen over? Do you happen to know, by any chance?” In our opinion, he feels like emptiness and nothingness. So, he found duck and empathy his brother Allie. And then he went to go Edmont Hotel.

At that hotel, there are lots of sexual pervert. Unfortunately, he saw that action. However he found paper which was given by Princeton guy. He called up that number whose name is Faith Cavendish. He said, she is not prostitute, but she can do it similarly. By the way, the result was fail because he lied to her. We don’t why, but in our opinion, he can answer about next date for drink cocktail. However, he didn’t because he want show her to a gentleman.

Finally, we will make some quizzes. For homework, commentators do the following:

1. Why Holden said about ducks?
2. Why Holden didn't call to Jane?

3. Why Holden said to taxi driver his regular address?

B.P.'s thoughts on chapters 7 & 8

First, we will summary about chapter 7. Holden come to room and turn on the light. He surprised because he saw a Ackley face all the blood face. He asked why they fight. Stradlater said that Holden had a lousy personality. But Ackley couldn’t understand that stuff. After Ackley sleeping, Holden trying not to think about old Jane and Stradlater in Ed Banksy’s car. But it was almost impossible. The trouble was I know that guys Stradlater technique. Suddenly he decided to go out Pencey! Because that place made him too sad and lonesome. Holden prepared all set his bag to go out and yelled at the along a passage. After he quickly goes down the stair.

Next, we will summary about chapter 8.After he escaped the dormitory and walked and walked to the station at night. The weather is so cold, but it doesn't matter to him just the cold made his nose hurt. When he arrived the station he needed to wait about ten minute. He liked that ride a train at night, but at that time his feeling wasn't enjoying. After he sit in the train, an women who was very good looking sit next to him. She recognized that Holden was same school with her son and she said she is Ernest Morrow's mom. He introduced his name, Rudolf Schmidt who he is the janitor of their dorm. It was first lie. Ernest was doubtless the biggest bastard. She wondered her son's school life, so he told lie to her that her son was very good student and about the election that almost everybody wanted Ernest to be a president, but he refused because he is so shy. And then Holden wanted to drink with her at club car, but she didn't. And she asked why he was outside of school even though wouldn't start the Christmas vacation. Holden told lie again. He said he had this tiny little tumor on the brain so he needed operation and that is reason why he had ridden the train. Over time they didn't talk too much, and they just read a timetable and a magazine. When the train arrived at Newark she invited Holden to their house in summer at Massachusetts. He said he can’t because he was going to South America with his grandmother and it was last lie.
Next, we will talk about Holden lies. Holden tell a lie to Ernest’s mother about he adapts himself very well to thing. Someone may think that it is a white lie because Ernest’s mother does not worry about his son, but we don’t think so. If he tells the truth, he will get advice to his mother or somebody, and then he will be better in school. Sometimes white lies are better than truths, but if someone can know the truth, truths are better than white lies.

Finally, we will give you 3 quizzes. For homework, commentators do the following:
1.      Holden don’t want to think about Jane and Stradlater when they were in Ed Bank’s car. Why Holden don’t want to think?
2.      Suddenly, Holden changed his mind, he decide really do. What is Holden’s decision?

3.      Why Holden don’t tell his name to Ernest’s mother?

Banana's Thoughts on Chapters 5 & 6

In chapter 5, Holden went to Agerstown with Mal Brossard and Ackley by bus because they planned to watch movie, but they didn’t so they just ate hamburgers. After they ate hamburgers and went to back to the dormitory. He wrote an essay that Stradlater asked to him. Stradlater wants to describe room or house on essay, but he wrote about Allie’s glove, which Allie wrote poems on before he died. Allie, Holden's younger brother, died 1946, because of leukemia. So Holden crushed the glass in the garage with his right hand, since he got sense of loss and was in pain because of his brother’s death and is why he sometimes can’t move his right hand well.
In chapter 6, Stradlater was angry because Holden wrote an essay about Allie’s glove not about describe room or house, so Holden tore essay to pieces that he wrote about Allie’s glove. Example Blog Post

Hey, ladies and gentlemen! Here's an example of what I would like your group to do for a blog post. This blog post is about 350 words. If this was a student example:stuff in blue shows me you read the chapter (it shows key events/details), stuff in red shows me you have examined/questioned what you read, and tried to make sense/build understanding of what you read, and what is underlined is the homework: which asks your classmates to make meaning from the text/react to the text/characters in some way based on what they read. You don't actually have to color your posts, but I just wanted to show you for the example how things should be balanced.

Example Post:
In chapter 2 of Catcher in the Rye (CITR) we meet a new character: Mr. Spencer. Mr. Spencer, who is Holden's History teacher, seems to be worried/upset about Holden's efforts in class. For example, Mr. Spencer tells Holden "Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules". He worries that Holden isn't actually living up to his potential and what he can actually achieve. However, even though he seems to be trying to help Holden, Holden doesn't want to listen. Maybe Holden isn't the nicest guy or the best student, or maybe he doesn't really like Mr. Spencer, which is why he isn't listening to him.

In fact, rather than listening to Mr. Spencer, Holden starts thinking about something else. He starts daydreaming about where the ducks  near the "lagoon in Central Park" go when winter comes around. It seems such a strange thing to be thinking about when someone is trying to help you out. Maybe the ducks mean something to Holden? Maybe they are symbols of something bigger?

For homework, do the following:

Describe Holden in just six words.

Why do you think Holden starts thinking about the ducks? What do you believe the ducks mean to him? What might they represent?
